The 1st Red Bull Soap Box Race, Roundhay Park - 02/09/01 Around 40,000 people pitched up at Roundhay Park, Leeds today to cheer on 50 teams of wannabe racing drivers in the first ever Red Bull Soap Box Race. Each team was launched from a 6 metre high ramp and then hurtled down the challenging 600-metre track to try to clinch the title.Entries were wild and wacky from a bunch of Mexicans in a huge can of beans to a giant orange carrot on wheels! Competitors were chosen from hundreds of entries and had travelled from all over the UK to take part in this crazy race that required the combination of creativity, technical know-how and sheer enthusiasm. Most relied on entertainment value and plain old good luck to power them to victory. In the end it was the aerodynamic metallic masterpiece, The Garage, a team of skilled mechanics from Glasgow, who won, bravely battling with hairpin bends and a steep finish line in an amazing 52 seconds! The winning prize was VIP tickets to the Italian Grand Prix in Monza later this month. In second place was a local team from Leeds, appropriately named, Team Wellpleased whose creation was a stunning pink and white cow complete with an udder full of milk and third place went to Team Wicked, a car assembled in only 5 hours and made from a filing cabinet! Crowds watched while presenter, Paul Danan (ex-Hollyoaks heartthrob, Sol Patrick) introduced each team on the launch stage, and Galaxy 105FM DJs Antony and Jo Jo got the lowdown on the finish line! Winning team The Garage were stunned as they took to the podium, spraying the crowds with champagne. The Glasgow lads, 2 engineers and 3 engineering students couldnt believe their luck commenting, "Were in absolute shock. We never expected to win and well certainly be back for more next time!"
