Rock N Roll Promz

ALAN MCGEE LAUNCHES ‘ROCK N ROLL PROMZ’ AT DISCOTHEQUE BY GATECRASHER WITH EXCLUSIVE PERFORMANCE

DJ Alan McGee, the man who discovered Oasis, will be spinning his decks at Discotheque by Gatecrasher on Sunday 25 September 2005, providing an exclusive showcase of his new act ‘Rock N Roll Promz’. McGee’s performance at the Leeds club kicks off a series of shows from the DJ across the country during the Autumn.

The concept for Rock N Roll Promz came to McGee during a DJ slot at this year's Glastonbury Festival. When told to turn down the volume, McGee was met by a wave of voices singing along with whatever was played. Taking the proverbial bovine by its headgear, McGee placed tunes by the likes of The Kinks, Oasis, The Verve, The Clash, Iggy Pop and The Beatles onto the turntables and thus, the Rock N Roll Promz seed was sown.

McGee, who will be making his first ever appearance at Discotheque, comments on giving Rock N Roll Promz its name and the type of music he will play: “It took me ages to think of the name. I wanted to evoke the spirit of England in 1966 ... hitting something iconic and something in the spirit ... like the classical proms at the Royal Albert Hall, only this time it is rock'n'roll and a celebration of rock'n'roll anthems. The music is like all the best songs you hear during the last hour of a wedding party.”

The idea of the night is to recreate a feeling of euphoria, that mood of celebration. Dance, drink, sing... simple. Glaswegian McGee, who founded Creation records, concludes: “Rock N Roll Promz is a club night for everyone. You go, you have a great time, you dance, and you sing your heart out!”

The special night will be accompanied by the launch of ‘A Night at 54’ at Discotheque. The night takes its inspiration from the legendary Studio 54 film, taking nightlife pleasure seekers back to days of New York glam. The whole club will be opened up giving party goers two fantastic nights, over two floors, in one extravaganza!

The legend of Studio 54 is the latest addition to Discothèque’s amazing line up of nights and is to be transformed beyond belief. From the makers of Brutus Gold and the Lovetrain, ‘A Night at 54’ will transport clubbers back to the famed Studio 54, where the likes of Andy Warhol and Muhammad Ali hobnobbed with Calvin Klein, Grace Jones and Eartha Kitt.

The Venue
The Venue was formerly Europa, which was a one-room concept with a main room dance floor and a balcony, this has been totally gutted with only the 4 walls remaining. The venue has always been a popular nightspot going back to the days of Mr Craig’s, which set the tone for nightclubbing in Leeds for a decade.

The DJ
Alan McGee is well-known in the industry as the maverick former Creation Records boss who discovered Oasis, runs Poptones (The Hives, The Cosmic Rough Riders, Captain Soul and The Bellrays signed to the label, amongst others) manages The Libertines, and keeps himself busy in between by DJ-ing for Death Disco.
