Description "Poverty Aid UK was the brain child of Vivienne Cockroft, who along with a team of volunteers, ran a very popular Oxfam furniture, clothing and bric-a-brac store on North Lane, Headingley. This shop was very popular with the local student population and others on low incomes, and made a very satisfactory monthly turnover.
Unfortunately the lease on the shop expired, in June of 2000 and the store was forced to close. However, a close working relationship had been forged between Vivienne and her team of volunteers, and as Oxfam had no plans to relocate the store, a mutual decision was made to start a new venture at alternative premises.

We had a collective eye on a large disused textile factory/former NVQ training centre, not far from North Lane, and after much negotiation an agreement was made to allow us to take over the building, initially on a six-month lease. We moved in to the premises in early June 2000 and opened for business two weeks later on the 24th, through funding provided by ourselves
Since December of 1999 our vision for the new company has been steadily growing, and it has been exciting to see the plans coming to fruition, step by step. If the truth were told, we have all been left somewhat breathless by the speed of developments, but we are excited, and we are looking forward to seeing the new venture grow and flourish, as our hard work reaps results." - Emlyn Hagan - Trustee
