Petrol Crisis or Planet Crisis?

"I have been really saddened this week to see that people are so narrow minded as not to realise that rather than queuing for petrol they could just use other forms of transport for a few days. They seem to have become so obsessed with their cars that they have forgotton that it's not only possible, but generally more healthy and less stressful, to get around by foot, bike, bus or train.

More importantly, 25% of greenhouse gas emissions in this country come from cars and thousands of people die every year in Europe as a direct result of air pollution. Surely this week is a time to reflect on what we can all do to reduce our emissions; thinking of others, our natural environment and our/our childrens' futures, rather than selfishly moaning about queuing for something most of us can do without anyway.

It is time for everyone to consider how they can use their cars more effectively and sensibly - for long, necessary journeys and carrying heavy things rather than for popping down the shops or driving a few miles to work" by Catherine Tonge.
