Party In The Park 2002 - 14/07/02

"Before I write anything about any of the bands, let me get a few complaints/moans out of the way, I'll start with the bad stuff and then the review can only get better.

As with last year, the queues for food and drink were fuc***g enormous, the food's ok but it doesn't take a genius to see that there aren't enough stalls, just like last year, so come on Leeds City Council - SORT IT OUT!! Also, it took us ages to get to Temple Newsam, the traffic was awful and as for leaving the car park it took us two and a half hours (it only took three hours to get out of Glastonbury!) Which reminds me, we met a right stroppy cow (in a silver Ford Puma) in the queue to leave, she lost her rag when I honked my horn for a bit of a laugh. If you know her please pass on a message from me - "Chill out you stupid fuc***g bitch, we had to put up with you singing Robbie Williams songs for two hours!!!"

Anyway, to the bands. If you want a full critical review of the relative musical merits of the events, please go somewhere else. All you're going to get from me are a few lines about most of the performers - OK!

The first act that we saw was Claire Sweeney, she tried hard enough but for God's sake stick to the day job love. Next we had a bit of foot tap to Aurora, who were pretty cool, you can't really complain about a bit of plinky-plonky-dancey-pop, the biggest response they received was for their cover of Ordinary World (originally by Duran Duran) which did well in the charts a few years ago if I remember rightly.

D-Mac may be good on record but hasn't really got the vocal strength to hack-it at an outdoor event, sorry.

Harvey from So Solid Crew was up next performing a song which I believe is going to be his first single. Unfortunately, he only did the one song, which was a shame, he was really trying to get the crowd going, fair play to him. The surprise of the day was probably former 5ive member Abs who was making his solo debut with a pretty cool Hip Hop/Reggae influenced tune which featured a very prominent sample of the classic Althea & Donna track 'Uptown Top Rankin'. I was thoroughly impressed to be perfectly honest (although 5ive were always pretty cool for a boy band) Abs the solo artist should do pretty well, and by the way his scantily clad dancers were quite impressive too!

Pop Idol finalist Zoe Birkett got the best reception so far and did a cracking version of 'Say a Little Prayer' which really let her stretch her vocal cords. However, it'd be nice to hear Zoe do a couple of nice modern pop songs. Jennifer Paige was up next, her 1998 hit 'Crush' went down, but her latest single was a bit of a let-down.

Mousse-T bizarrely started off with 'Horny' a cracking summer tune, but seemed to be a strange choice for an event with such a young audience. Ryze are a kind of Garagey boy band who were ok but certainly nothing special.

Another Pop Idol loser, Darius got a frenzied reception and enthusiastically performed, but only did one song which was a bit strange. According to the girls I'd gone with he's pretty sexy too??

Kelly Llorena performed her hit 'True Love Never Dies', a cover version of Taylor Dane's 'Tell it to my Heart'  and that Old Skool house classic from 1995 'Set You Free' and she really got the crowd dancing, good effort.

The prizes for Biggest Hair and Craziest outfit has to go to Rhianna, who seemed really nervous at first but soon relaxed and started to properly enjoy herself. 3SL are definitely not as good as Simon Booth. They're like a living stereotype as they pranced and danced their way through their only hit, oh great!!

Busted, oh my fuc***g God!! A pop boy band who seem to think that they're Punks. Sorry to disappoint boys but you're not Green Day. Go back to stage school you little tw*ts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bloshing? Squad (or something) can only be described as 10 twelve year old boys in track suits who for some reason seemed to get a reception usually reserved for international superstars - very strange. Even stranger was their disturbing swaying dance routines.

Blue - oh my God the screaming girls are far too much. Not bad for a boy band though, all-singing, all-dancing performance. Overall Sugarbabes were probably the best artists of the day, they just seem to have something more about them than most pop acts these days.

Hear'say came on stage to rapturous boo's. Loads of people booed between songs but cheered, shouted, sang and danced during them - very peculiar. Myleen seems to have lost loads of weight and is now all boobs and hair and looks like a big lollipop.

Westlife are just big scary freaks of nature, but the kids seemed to like them. There's one member of Westlife who's got an enormous freaky looking head - Bryan I think. Westlife.org - Westlife Pics.jpg (27347 bytes)

Overall "Party in the Park 2002" was a pretty good day out, the weather was great and it looked like most people enjoyed themselves, it's just a shame about the organisation!" - by Emlyn, Karen, Hayley & Kelly.
