Poverty Aid UK Benefit Gig - The Rocket, 01/11/01

"Last Thursday (01/11/01) I went down to the Rocket (the pub attached to the Cockpit) for the first Poverty Aid UK Benefit gig

The gig was organised by PA volunteer and manager of the band ‘10, 000 things’, David. The huge amount of hard work he put in obviously paid off, the place was packed and all three bands were great. Also PA UK received not only much needed funds, but tons of publicity…..

I was a bit late and missed most of Little Sister’s set, but am reliably informed they were really good. It was a shame that more people didn’t make it earlier enough, but the place quickly filled up in time for Mondo Sauve – a well known local band. I’m not quite sure how to describe this lot! Sleazy and bizarre might be a start – but musically good and extremely entertaining. The lead singer did a fantastic bare-chested sexy act on top of the bar (the poor bar person ran away quick!) and then before we knew what was happening was roaming round the audience very nearly naked – eeek! Oh, and he had a great voice! My friend tells me he always tries to catch their gigs – now I know why, fantastic entertainment if a little too close for comfort! Mondo Suave
10,000 Things Headliners 10,000 things were superb, the singer’s deep and powerful voice didn’t seem to fit his slight frame. They sounded extremely professional, and I especially liked the HUGE bongo/percussion set which as well as looking great really added to their sound. David tells me they’re going to go all the way – well of course he would say that, but he might just be right.

The musical treats were followed by a quick raffle in the bar, unfortunately a bit rushed and hard to hear as we were moved out of the middle room so they could set up for Poptastic. However, prizes of champagne and Poverty Aid UK vouchers were happily snapped up and the place was still crowded until it shut.

So. Well done to all the organisers, thanks for a great night out, and thank you on behalf of Poverty Aid UK to everyone who turned up.

Now, get yourselves down to Poverty Aid UK for some bargain furniture, clothes, records and household goods! And watch out for all three bands – I know I will 'cos they're all well worth a look." - Catherine Tonge
