| So, it's
happened - the one & only Nelson Mandela has visited Leeds for the first time - we
were there, camera in hand, to experience this once in a lifetime event. The event was hosted by John Snow (the newsreader with the wacky ties)
who was enthusiastic but seemed to struggle to keep things moving, but he seemed genuinely
moved by what was happening. Leeds United captain Lucas Radebe also joined him on stage to
introduce the great man.
Mr Mandela himself was about 20 minutes late getting onto the
stage, but when you're 80 odd years old, been in prison for 27 years and are a hero to
millions, why hurry! The presence that this "little old man" has is amazing and
the experience of being just metres away from such a icon was incredibly moving. He was
presented with a Gold Owl as part of the "Freedom of the City" thing and then,
what everyone had been waiting for finally happened. Nelson Mandela the hero of the
struggle for freedom in South Africa spoke to the crowd for about ten minutes.
He spoke of how it was a pleasure to be here, how the
tinniest blade of grass, leaves on a tree and sound of a stream, filled him with joy - but
it didn't matter what he was saying, it was Nelson Mandela and he was talking to us!!!!!!!
I can honestly say that this is a day that I'll never forget,
thanks Nelson!! |
