"How Was It For You? Memories of the 1940s" by Rob Horlock

"How Was It For You? Memories of the 1940s"

by Rob Horlock

A COLLECTION OF 1940’s MEMORIES PUBLISHED DURING 60TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR OF THE END OF WW2

Commemoration of the end of World War Two will be high on the agenda this summer as the country prepares to mark the 60th anniversaries of Victory in Europe (VE Day) and Victory over Japan (VJ Day). Celebrating the personal memories of this pivotal decade of the 20th Century, Rob Horlock’s newly published book, How Was It For You?, details stories and reminiscences of the 1940s from people across the UK and abroad.

The second in Rob Horlock’s series of 20th Century memory collections, How Was It For You? promises to be an eye-opener for younger generations as it paints a vivid picture of a country at war, including fascinating personal memories from childhood through to later life. The book begins with a historical overview against which themes of memories are presented, such as ‘The Blitz’, ‘Evacuees’, ‘Doing My Bit’ and ‘After The War’.

Rob Horlock, of Cadnam, Hampshire, researched the 1940’s period through interviews and correspondence with people from all walks of life who were happy to share their varied memories. The result is a warm and personal account of life at the time, with recollections revealing recurring themes that contrast with the individual reflections. One terrifying account recalls a bombing of Hackney, whilst another shares heart-warming memories of communications with an absent father sending “itchy jumpers and Tammy hats” from his station in the Shetland Isles.
