The Saturday Session - Saturday 20th September

"Not one to miss the opportunity of something a bit different to do on a Saturday night, I persuaded a few friends to come down to the HiFi club to check out their new comedy night, which started earlier this month.

The HiFi is a really nice venue – simple and about as light and airy as an underground space can be! There weren’t quite enough chairs and tables, and I did object to standing up for the first hour or so but I suppose I should have got there earlier! There was a very pleasant and laid back atmosphere, with the bar staff seeming to enjoy the show as much as the customers.

We missed Silky, the first comedian, but were just in time for Alan Carr who was refreshingly unusual in that he was a happy comedian – what a pleasant change! Being of a cheerful disposition myself it was great to see a comedian genuinely enjoying himself. There was nothing stunningly original or ground breaking – just a great set of jokes about everyday stuff we can all relate to (the supermarket, the news, TV). I’m not sure some of the Manchester based jokes were fully appreciated (although as a Manc I can confirm they were great), maybe a bit of local research was needed. For me though this was the best set of the night – good non-offensive fun.

Brendan Burke seems to have rave reviews and certainly went down well with the crowd tonight, but wasn’t my cup of tea to be honest – although I’m very fussy when it comes to comedy. He was very professional and clearly knows his stuff though, and I couldn’t fault his hilarious mime of bouncers and drunken men at the end. He was a bit too offensive for my liking (boring old stereotypes about Germans and muesli for example, yaaaaaawn), but like I say most other people seemed to enjoy it – if that’s your cup of tea then I can recommend him.

All in all I can highly recommend this night - £6 seemed quite reasonable for a three hour show and it was certainly a much more relaxing and entertaining evening than sitting in a noisy bar, I’d just advise you to get there early and bag a seat!" - Catherine Tonge

The Saturday Session takes place every Saturday at the HiFi Club, followed by the clubnight - Boogaloo Club
